Principles & Philosophy

Wellesley Youth Basketball Association is guided by these principles:

  1. Maximize the number of kids in grades 2 through 12 participating in Wellesley Youth Basketball Associtaion programs town wide. Grades that cover the kids playing in Wellesley Hoops, Metrowest, HS League, Mini-Raiders and Spring Hoops.

  2. Support travel and town programs tailored to the unique needs of the players served, including  travel teams that offer programs to highly dedicated players who make the time commitment required, and town/inter-town teams that offer a competitive basketball experience requiring less of a time commitment.

  3. Seek mutually beneficial integration and coordination with the WMS and WHS basketball programs.

  4. Each program is designed and managed by the Board for the long-term development of Wellesley Basketball. The interests of Wellesley Basketball come before individual program, coach, player, staff, or board member interests. Coaches, staff and volunteers serve in a manner consistent with the Program as determined by the Board.

  5. Emphasize transparency and a robust feedback/communication system with appropriate checks and balances.

  6. Implement structures that will allow the Board and Programs to avoid conflicts of interest in decision making processes.

  7. Offer the highest quality programs at the lowest possible cost.

  8. Conduct tryouts in an objective manner. Tryouts should be fair and transparent. For tryouts that will result in cuts, every effort should be made to use third-party evaluators who do not have children participating in the program at any level. It will be important to set clear expectations about the process up front, and open lines of communication for players should be available before and after tryouts.

  9. Commit to securing the best possible coaches for every team. Coaches play a crucial role in shaping the experience and development for each player in the program. Recognizing this, we are committed to investing in and supporting the development and capabilities of our coaches, be they volunteer parents or, if necessary, paid outsiders. Additionally, we share a commitment to an open process for selecting those coaches with the over-arching criteria centered around those coaches who value and are best able to facilitate well-rounded player development, which includes the development of player's skills, their understanding of the game, sportsmanship, and respect for the integrity of their coaches, teammates, and referees.

  10. The Board will be guided by these Principles. The Board will operate under a governance structure typical of best-in-class youth sports boards.
